An Exploration of Tattered World

After regaining access to my old Neopets account, I had an itch for playing more virtual pet sites. Tattered World was one that I found in 2018 but only started playing again recently.

Lore

Tattered World has an interesting backstory where the Unmaker tore apart the fabric of reality, making the world “tattered” and leaving behind Threads. Threads are the “formless debris of the destroyed world”. Little creatures called Kith then started appearing from the Threads.

You play as a student in this world where you’re tasked with studying Kith and exploring all the different areas. These cute Kith help students navigate the threads and serve as the virtual pets of the website. Here’s my Kith, Snoop:

You can also earn currency to unlock customizations for your avatar. Here’s some of mine:

As you progress in the game, you unlock more areas called Remnants with each of them having their own unique characters, themes, and storylines. My personal favorite Remnants are the Cosmic Solarium (sci-fi world) and Gallery Trappings where the NPCs there are living paintings!

Gameplay

Compared to other virtual pet sites, Tattered World has more of an emphasis on NPCs and questing. To progress further and unlock different Remnants, you’re required to complete quests for NPCs and raise their reputation points.

These quests are simple enough where most of them have you collecting items for NPCs or interacting with your virtual pet. I found myself getting a bit attached to the NPCs after going through their stories, which is nice because they’re a big part of the game. It’s sort of like Animal Crossing where you unlock more unique dialogue the more you bond with the characters.

Another unique aspect I liked about the game was the fact that the NPCs would also post in the forums. Half of the lore is told through questing, while the other half is done on the forums. It’s an interesting way to tell a story and engage with the community. In today’s world where forums are starting to fade away in favor of social media sites, it’s nice to see forums be used in this way. Very creative!

Some of my favorite NPCs from left to right: Elliot, Miranda, Lycus, Robin, Chrysa, and Marcus.

Questing and Community

The items required for quests are usually obtained by looking for them in the shops or crafting them. However, you can get lucky by having a user gift you the quest items if they see it on your wishlist.

I’ve been blessed by many users gifting me quest items, which definitely helped speed up my progress. Generosity is encouraged in this game through the wishlist system. Plus, the community on the forums is very friendly and eager to help out new players.

Feedback

My main gripes with the game are its low playerbase and the amount of time it takes to complete certain quests. Some of them ask for harder-to-obtain items that take a while to appear in the shops. Questing itself can also be repetitive as you reload the website and wait for the item you need to appear.

It’s meant to be a slower paced game, but I was eager to complete the quests to see the next part of the story. If you’re even more impatient than me, then you can use real life money to buy gems to speed up the progress a bit and unlock things faster. Luckily, you don’t need gems to be able to access the content.

Closing Thoughts

I feel like my main issues can be resolved if there were more active players. More players means more people to help out with quests and engage with in general. I am a bit bummed that Tattered World didn’t gain the same level of popularity that Flight Rising and Santae did because I feel like it’s still a solid virtual pet website.

I’ve become rather fond of its virtual pets, lore, and characters. I only played through the intro quests, but I think I’ll continue playing since I’ve been enjoying my time with Tattered World. I see the potential and hope it gains the same level of popularity as the bigger virtual pet sites.
